What to expect from the treatments.

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution (generally a salt solution) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view.

In contrast to varicose veins, spider veins are smaller. There is usually a red color to them. They may resemble tree branches or spider webs. As opposed to varicose veins, spider veins are usually visible under the skin, but they do not bulge out. The valves in your veins can malfunction, preventing blood from flowing normally and resulting in varicose veins and spider veins.

Spider veins appear most often in the legs. This is because the veins in your legs carry blood to your heart against gravity and for the longest distance of anywhere in the body.

Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for smaller varicose veins and spider veins. The doctor injects a chemical into the vein. The chemical causes the vein walls to swell, stick together, and seal shut. This stops the flow of blood, and the vein turns into scar tissue. In a few weeks, the vein should fade. You may need multiple treatments for it to work.

Occasionally, varicose veins and spider veins come back.
